Mercedes Steering Rack Reconditioning Process

Steering Racks that have been reconditioned are sent back out to be refitted after going through a number of stages to complete their reconditioning.

Strip-Down and Part Identification

This includes strip-down of the entire Steering Rack and identification of the individual Mercedes model. There are a large number of Mercedes Steering Racks that are utilised by a wide variety of vehicles and therefore correct identification of the model in question is crucial to ordering correct parts for reconditioning.

Cleaning and Component Assessment

Every single component is thoroughly cleaned and checked for signs of wear, such as scoring or corrosion, on the rack shaft, housing and valve body, to guarantee that only a 100% reconditioned Mercedes Steering Rack is sent out to customers.

Seal and Bearing Replacement

All seals, O-rings and bearings are replaced with new ones during reconditioning of the Steering Rack.

Internal Clearance Checks

The rack-to-pinion mesh and internal clearances are then measured and set to the relevant specification. It is these very same tolerances, outlined within the relevant automotive engineering standards, that in fact signify a well-reconditioned item, superior to that of a mere repair.

Pressure and Leak Testing

During reassembly of the Steering Rack, the completed item is then subjected to pressure testing in order to confirm that the new seals etc have tightened up correctly and that there are no leaks internally of the Steering Rack.

Final Quality Check

The reconditioned Mercedes Steering Racks are checked before they are sent off.

This means that skipping any of the above steps would result in reconditioned Mercedes Steering Racks which are not properly reconditioned and could fail very quickly.
