Understand the Legal Baseline
Under the Confined Space Regulations 1997, employers must ensure that no one enters a confined space unless a safe system of work has been put in place and adequate rescue arrangements are in place. This will include trained rescue personnel to carry out the rescue.
Know What “Competent” Means in Practice
A competent person is someone who has the required knowledge, experience and training to carry out the rescue safely and effectively. This is particularly important for Confined Space Rescue as there are many potential hazards, and a lot of specialised equipment which must be used correctly in high pressure situations.
Non-Entry Versus Entry Rescue Training
Non-entry rescue involves using equipment such as tripods and winches to retrieve a casualty from a confined space without entering it. However, entry rescue involves the rescuer entering the space to retrieve a casualty and therefore requires more in-depth training and has specific competency requirements that must be met.
Refresh Training Regularly
Normally refresher training is required within one to three years. Check with your training provider for their specific requirements and make sure you have recorded all sessions for which you have been certified.
