The wonders of Pendragon Castle

When you say the name Pendragon there is generally only one person you think of the once and future king of the Britons Arthur. There is a lot debate about whether Arthur existed or not. After the Roman legions left to defend Roman the Centurions and Generals made a point of telling the Romanised Britons that they wouldn’t be back anytime soon, and it might be an idea to look to their own defences. The Romano-Britons decided to ask the Saxons to defend the coast. They liked the job so much they decided to stay and even told their rivals the Angles and Jutes how great it was, so they came over to. As the populace lost the skills to right and record things the Dark Ages beckoned. It’s thought of as being a time of war and constant conflict and although that’s being increasingly challenged as it seemed that in fact the Britons and the newcomers mixed, inter married and traded quite happily. The expansion of the Saxons, Angles and Jutes seems to have been checked for many years and this is attributed to Arthur.  He was a noble, brave and kind man, his Dad on the other hand was not so much. The legend is centred around South Wales, but the home of Uther is reputed to be far to the North in Cumbria and Pendragon Castle. It is in a bit of a state and it might have been an idea for Uther to consider going back to huis home land and use a Skip Hire Swansea based company like http://pendragoncarmarthenshire.co.uk/

The site of Pendragon Castle is set in the glorious Cumbria countryside and near the Village of Kirby Stephen. It is said to be the ancestral home of the Pendragons. The Town is outside the Lake District and is at the top end of the Pennine Range with the Yorkshire Dales to the North. The Castle sits on a hill top and has commanding views. It is a Square stone design and there is not much left of it unfortunately. There is a reason for that a raiding Army from Scotland burnt it down.  The Pendragon legend says that Uther founded the castle as a defence against the Saxon invaders. They sneaky poisoned the Well and Uther was killed. This is a little at odds with other stories of his demise such as by ambush in Wales by the Duke of Cornwall’s men after Uther had slept with his wife using Merlin’s magic to change his appearance.

Sadly, there is little evidence of all this as the earliest indications from archaeology show it was built as a fort by the Romans first and then changed into a more modern castle by the Normans. It was burnt down by the Scots though, that bit is confirmed. It’s on private land but access is granted.

How Is Silicone Manufactured?

Silicone is used in all sorts of industries and for a variety of types of products. Although silicone isn’t biodegradable, it can be recycled and so is deemed to be reasonably environmentally friendly. As such, the silicone manufacturing market is predicted to grow by six per cent up to 2021. But how is it made?

How Silicone Is Made

Essentially, making silicone is a bit like baking. The raw ingredients are placed into huge mixing bowls and turned until they’re thoroughly blended. This blending process is crucial to ensure the stability of the rest of the manufacturing process and that any colours added, for example, are evenly distributed.

Once the initial mix is created, it can then be transformed into end products, and this is achieved by the use of machinery which convert the mix into the shape or size required. There are two main types of machines: extruders and calenders.

Calenders convert the silicone mix into sheets, while extruders remove any air from the mix and force it through a premade mould to create a specific shape.

These specific shapes, or parts, can then be joined together using a vulcanisation process to create extremely strong seams, which allow silicone products to be used under pressure.

What Is Silicone Used For?

It is often used by a silicone hose manufacturer, and companies like https://www.goodflexrubber.com/pages/silicone-hose-manufacture/ can produce them in all manner of shapes and sizes.

If you’re looking for a supplier of silicone, or indeed any type of product, it’s always worth checking whether they have ISO certification. According to the International Organization for Standardization, the benefit of a company having ISO certification is that they are conforming to what is widely agreed to be the best of way of doing something. This standardisation covers everything from road and toy safety to the quality of air and soil and ensures the products we buy are of good quality and manufactured using best practices.

But silicone products are used in all sorts of industries. Because silicone is resistant to bacteria and does not irritate the body, it is used for all manner of medical appliances. It’s easy to sterilise too, so products can be reused.

Many bakeware products are now also made from silicone, as it creates a non-stick and flexible product which is easy to use and clean.

Tank Decommissioning: What Happens During a Typical Project?

The decommissioning and disposal of chemical and oil tanks will have to adhere to strict procedures to ensure the safety of people, the environment and the property on which the tank stands. With the right planning and equipment, professional decommissioning can run smoothly, and in some cases at very little cost to the owner. Some residual contents have a commercial value, which can offset the cost of decommissioning.

For that reason, it is best to get tanks decommissioned and moved as soon as possible after the end of their use, ensuring that any valuable contents do not develop impurities. With that in mind, what can you expect from a typical decommissioning? Here are the key steps which comply with industry legislation and practice.

Site Visit, Planning and Sampling

Tank decommissioning requires meticulous and skilled planning. A site visit will first be conducted to assess the condition and contents of the tank. Restrictions at the site are taken into account and a thorough risk assessment carried out. The contents of the tank will be sampled and tested off-site in laboratory conditions to determine the potential commercial value.

Decontamination and Cleaning

After all the residual contents have been pumped or drained away, the inside of the tank will be cleaned with either a vacuum or mechanical cleaner. Disposal of the contents of the tank will have to comply with legislation to prevent the risk of contamination of the surrounding environment. The tank will be cleaned thoroughly so that the metal itself can be recycled, again offsetting the cost of the decommission. Any flammable gases will be removed safely or reduced to inert substances.

Dismantling, Removing, Disposing

When it is safe, the tank will be pulled apart and removed from the site. The site where the tank was situated will be tested for contamination and all infrastructure removed. For more information, search online for companies like http://www.ashremediation.co.uk/tank-decommissioning, who are experts in decommissioning tanks for various industries. Companies like these can ensure that your tank is removed safely and without risk to you and the environment.

To get your tank decommissioned safely and securely, always seek professional help, and remember that the sooner you arrange this the more you can offset the cost with the recycling of both the contents and the metal tank itself.

The first recorded member of the Russell family, dates back to the year 1394. Stephen Russell of Dorset was the member of parliament for the town of Weymouth. It wasn’t until the 16th century however that the Russell family lived in the great house. The great great grandson of Stephen Russell, John, made the family its own fortune and the grand estate was gifted to him by none other than the King himself, Edward VI! John was then made a baron and then the first Earl of Bedford.

The house itself was originally a monastery before King Henry VIII fell out with the Roman Catholic church and established his own, the Church of England. The Abbott of the monastery at the time, Robert Hobbes was executed for treason – he was hanged from a tree in the grounds which is said to still be standing today.

The family were not exempt from execution either – in 1683 Lord William Russell was executed for being involved in the Rye House Plot. He was however, posthumously pardoned, and by way of apology granted the title the Duke of Bedford, to be passed down the family tree.

Speaking of trees, the gardens of Woburn abbey are not only beautiful to look at but played a part in one of the biggest scientific breakthroughs of all time. In the gardens the first ecological experiments were conducted, the results of which assisted Charles Darwin with his famous discovery and his book on this – The Origin of the species.

During the First World War, Duchess Mary became a nurse and opened up the house for use as a military hospital. Mary was also well known as the flying Duchess and broke many records before sadly disappearing whilst flying from London to Norfolk.

The Abbey was not open to the public until 1950 and remains a popular attraction for tourists, who come to learn more about the family history and to stroll around the beautiful gardens.

Nature documentaries are as beneficial as meditation

If you’re looking for ways to feel more relaxed and improve your mental well-being, you should tune into a nature documentary.

We are all subjected to huge amounts of media every day and we should be more mindful of how our mind is being impacted. This includes TV shows, movies, books, magazines and radio. This constant barrage has a significant effect on our feelings, beliefs, thoughts and perspectives. This is why it’s important to focus on the good and try to avoid the bad.

Following research by the University of California and BBC Earth, it turns out that one of the best things to watch to boost your mood is a nature documentary.

The research involved asking 7,500 volunteers to watch short clips of news, a popular drama and then a nature documentary. The findings demonstrated that feelings of awe, contentment, curiosity and wonder were reported after seeing the nature documentary. They reported feeling less anxious, tired and stressed when watching the nature clip. There are many other studies that also report how beneficial it is for people to spend time in nature.

Some of these other studies included one that demonstrated how walking in nature reduces feelings of depression. Bird-watching in your own garden can lessen feelings of anxiety and even just listening to the sounds of nature has a relaxing, comforting effect.

With the huge benefits of being in nature clear to see, it’s also clear why even just watching a nature documentary on your TV or smartphone is enough to invoke similar feelings of contentment. What are the different types of materials for radiators?

We don’t spend much time thinking about the humble radiator until something goes wrong. They work tirelessly for us all through winter, keeping us warm and toasty. Made from conductive metals, the main types are mild steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminium. They vary in conductivity (the speed at which heat travels through it) and price, so let’s look at the different materials and their benefits:

Cast Iron

These are the radiators that were found in Victorian homes and old libraries for example. They are a remnant of the industrial revolution, look very formidable and are said to be the most efficient. However, when compared to modern materials, they are just as efficient as stainless steel or mild steel. Because cast iron is great for releasing heat slowly, they were ideal for large, cold manors but this is not so much of a need in today’s homes. They remain popular though for their amazing antique period and ability to stay hot for a long time look but note that they are super heavy!

Steel

Steel or mild steel is a popular choice because of its relative cheapness and ability to be shaped into a huge variety of designs and styles. Steel radiators are also available in a wide range of colours, making them a great choice for fitting in with any décor style. They will require a bit of maintenance to avoid rust build-up but make a good choice if you need to purchase multiple units. For column radiators, visit http://apolloradiators.co.uk/designer-radiators/roma-horizontal-steel-column-radiator

Stainless-Steel

Another very popular material choice for radiators, stainless steel radiators are low maintenance and don’t rust. They are a bit more expensive than mild steel but hold their heat excellently. They are also available in an exciting range of weird and wonderful designs, as well as standard, simple and chic styles. Stainless steel makes a solid long-term investment that needs minimal maintenance and will stay warm for a good couple of hours after the heating goes off.

Aluminium

Many consider aluminium to the best material choice for radiators. This is because aluminium is a super-conductor, heating up quickly and spreading that heat faster than other materials. They are highly responsive but also command the highest price. The only downside is that you do need to be careful about dints and dents. Aluminium also represents a solid investment in the long run with cheaper fuel costs and you’ll feel the benefits immediately inside your home.

In conclusion, it’s clear to see how the material you choose effects the performance of a radiator. There is more to consider than the simple aesthetics. Another question to ask before you replace radiators is what will you be using it for? For example, a heated towel rail will serve a bathroom well, but you’ll want something different for the bedroom.
