Where would we be without electricity? One answer, advanced by the Eagle comic in their 1980’s cartoon strip “The Tower King”, is that we would be sent back into a new middle ages and have to go and live in a Castle again in some kind of Game of Thrones world. Simply put then electricity is incredibly important and vital to our modern day survival. No Television, no computers, with cooking food and boiling water over open fires becoming the norm. Steam trains would have to come back though so it’s not all bad. Luckily we are not in that space in society, electricity powers some incredible technological advances such as the products provided by a Home Automation Company where you can control your home at the touch of a button. Who and how did we discover this miraculous power?

You can’t really “discover” electricity because it is a natural force that existed well before we came along with our fancy science ideas. Anyone looking out of their mud hut during a lighting storm could see that there was plainly something going on as there was all this bright hot flashing stuff shooting down from the sky blowing up trees and incinerating slow moving wildlife. Think instead of us understanding what it is and then trying to figure out how we can use it to our advantage, which is the approach that humans take to most things they find in the natural world.

Scientists knew about static electricity, probably by rubbing their feet on a carpet and then touching a mate, but the true discovery of really powerful electricity comes from Benjamin Franklin. Franklin theorised that electricity had both positively and negatively charged elements and electricity flowed between them. So, a cloud is a positive and the earth is the negative therefore the lighting is the flow of energy.
To test this he waited till there was a nice big storm and contrary to sensible advice he set off up a hill with a kite and key to illustrate this. He launched the kite up into the air with the key tied around it act as a conductor. The lightning stuck, the key glowed and Franklin got a shock but he had proved that electricity was a power. One hundred years later Thomas Edison used this power to generate a small amount of energy to pass through a metal coil in a light bulb.
Although Franklin gets the praise it turns out that using electricity might have older roots. The basics for batteries have been discovered in use by the Egyptians, who also had knowledge of steam power, and English’s scientists William Gilbert and Sir Thomas Browne were already studying it fifty years before Franklin.
In the UK, we often complain about the weather, but extreme weather isn’t that common. However, since weather records began in 1766, there have been a few storms that bought death and destruction to our shores. Here are some of the worst that have hit the UK:
Bristol Channel Floods of 1607
A terrifying and sudden deluge on 30th January 1607 caused the deaths of more than 2,000 people and mass destruction to livestock and farmland. It was long believed to have been the result of a storm surge, but recent evidence suggests the damage could have been caused by a tsunami.
1703 Storm
Perhaps the deadliest storm to hit our shores occurred in 1703 when a storm battered the country for over a week. Between 8,000 and 15,000 people were killed, an entire lighthouse was swept away, and the author Daniel Defoe wrote a book about it in 1704.
Eyemouth Disaster of 1881
On the south coast of Scotland in October 1881, terrible winds caused many fishing boats to capsize, killing 189 men. 129 of the men were from the village of Eyemouth. Those who live in the village still refer to the day as Black Friday.
The Great Blizzard of 1891
In 1891, Devon and Cornwall were almost cut off from the rest of the country after four days of strong gales brought down trees and the temperatures dropped to below zero bringing snow drifts of almost 15 feet in some areas. 200 people died, along with 6,000 animals and both roads and railways became impassable. Hopefully we won’t experience any more storms of this magnitude. Should a storm cause tree damage on your property, contact a Tree Surgeon Poole like Tree Surgeon Poole Kieran Boyland

The North Sea Flood of 1953
One of the biggest storm surges recorded happened in January 1953 when flooding caused the evacuation of 30,000 people, of which 326 drowned. 24,000 properties were ruined as the flooding spread to cover 160,000 hectares.
The Big Freeze of 1962/63
This winter was one of the harshest and longest on record. The icy spell started on 22nd December, providing a white Christmas in Scotland before sweeping south. The Arctic conditions lasted until March of 1963 and saw rivers and lakes completely freezing over.
The Great Storm of 1987
This is one of the most famous storms thanks to weatherman Michael Fish denying it was going to happen. The storm did hit and caused more than £1 billion worth of damage. 18 people were killed, thousands of homes were without power for days, 15 million trees were lost, and road and rail networks became blocked with wreckage.

The 2000 Floods
During late October 2000, the UK was in for the wettest autumn it had seen for 200 years. Five major rivers burst their banks and winds of up to 93mph were recorded. Over 10,000 homes suffered flooding, costing the economy an estimated £1 billion.
