How to Check Your Home’s Insulation Before Winter
To most homeowners, they don’t even think about it. The insulation in our walls is so out of sight, out of mind, that it almost becomes invisible. However, it wasn’t for the insulation in your walls, there is a good chance that you would be one solid block of ice. Indeed, the insulation in our homes is vital for keeping us warm, comfortable and safe. Not only that, but it keeps the cold air out and traps the warm air in, which is important when you have the heat blasting and don’t want to waste energy. Not only is a lack of insulation uncomfortable – but it can also be a source of financial waste as well. Here are some ways that you can check your home’s insulation before winter.

Before you start choosing a new furnace for your home or taking other measures to prepare your home for the winter, you want to make sure that you have proper insulation. It’s an essential first step. Without the proper insulation, your furnace won’t be able to do its job correctly – most of the heat will simply escape through the walls. You can usually see with your own eyes the insulation in your attic and sometimes in your basement, but it can be harder to find the insulation in other walls. In order to do this, you need to unscrew phone jacks and electrical plates to get an insider view into your walls.
If it appears that you need more insulation, then you have your answer: your home needs to be re-insulated. However, there may be the case where you find that you have proper insulation, but it is the wrong kind of insulation for your region’s climate. Not only that, but your insulation may not have been properly installed – either because you live in an older home or because of shoddy workmanship. You can usually tell if it is one or the other if you start to notice that certain rooms in your home are colder than others.
When it comes down to it, your insulation should have a proper moisture barrier as well. You can find the moisture barrier by looking for what looks like a sheet of aluminum under the insulation. Also, you want to find out what the R-value of your insulation is. You can do this by spotting any numbers or text on your insulation. The R-value will connote what climatic region your insulation is intended for. If the R-value is wrong or if there is no moisture barrier, you may want to re-insulate.
Lastly, re-insulating can be an easy job, especially in the attic. In most cases, your home only needs to be re-insulated in the attic.
Having the proper insulation in the attic will prevent warm air from escaping. When hot air escapes through the roof, it can not only cool down your home -it can also melt snow and ice on your roof, which can result in water leaks and possibly water damage. So, make sure that you find out the proper R-value for your region and purchase the proper amount of insulation. At the end of the day, you should be re-insulating at the start of the cold season, but if you haven’t already – better late than never.

Managing Your Small Business: 5 Tips to Keep You Motivated
When you first decide to launch your small business venture, you’re likely very motivated to get the doors open and start earning some money. You have probably decided to open shop on your own as a way to get out from under the thumb of a supervisor, be your own boss, and finally see the fruits of your labor coming back to you. But starting a business is no easy undertaking. Even if you have a background in business and you are familiar with the industry you’re entering, you still have to do research, pen a business plan, secure funding, find a location, and put the whole act together. It’s a lot of work, to put it mildly. And once you’ve gotten your company off the ground, you’ll face an uphill battle to gain clientele and stay afloat until you can build up a reputation and following that provides you with enough profits to be solvent. In short, you can easily get burned out on the whole deal.

So here are just a few tips to keep you motivated when it comes to managing your small business.
Set realistic goals
Nothing begets success better than success, so start by setting small goals that are easily accomplished, as well as larger goals that you can work up to. Completing tasks to reach simple and realistic goals can give you the confidence and satisfaction needed to fuel further efforts, paving the way to much larger successes over time and helping to motivate you along the way. If you’re feeling worn down, all you have to do is look back on all you have accomplished in order to get the boost you need to carry on.
Find a mentor
If the weighty task of managing your own business leaves you tired and frustrated day after day, maybe what you need is someone to give you a pep talk. A suitable mentor will be a business person that has been through all of this before and emerged on the other side with a successful and growing business like the one you’re trying to build. And whether this person is an angel investor, a friend of the family, or someone you met through an online industry forum, you can get the advice and support you need to keep plugging away.
Find a partner
There are two good reasons to consider taking on a business partner. For one, the influx of investment funds can only help to stabilize your company. And for another, you’ll have someone to split your responsibilities with. This not only relieves you of the burden of working around the clock, but it also means you have someone to talk to that is just as invested in the business as you, making it easy to discuss issues affecting the company and come to the right decision about the direction you want to take. Two heads are better than one, after all. Just make sure you bring in someone who is on the same page and is easy to work with.
Get to know your team. Team-building exercises are a great way for your team members to get to know each other in a more casual setting, helping them to build personal relationships, as well as trust. And there’s no reason you shouldn’t participate, as well. A small business is not a corporation, and so long as you feel comfortable separating your personal feelings from your professional obligations, there’s no reason you can’t blow off some steam with your crew and potentially regain some momentum in the process.
Visit a career coach
When it comes to career development, taking a leap of faith and starting your own business is a big move. And once it’s done you may find yourself struggling to become a leader and effectively manage your business. This is exactly the sort of problem that a professional career coach from a company can help you with. There’s no need to flounder in a self-fashioned mire of doubt and negativity. A career coach can help you to pinpoint your strengths, set goals, and work out a plan that will help you to succeed. Even better, you can enjoy every step of the way.
How to Plan a Memorable Birthday Bash for a Friend
If you have a close friend who deserves an extra special birthday party, then you know that you really need to do it right. You want to be sure to make this birthday party one that they will remember and cherish for years to come. If you don’t really know how to plan a party, there are a few things you need to know. Here are five tips on how to plan a memorable birthday bash for a friend.

- Find some old memories to reference or bring back. If there are any memorable places that you’ve been, performances that you’ve seen together, or restaurants you used to frequent when you were young, these are great things to incorporate into your birthday bash. Try to think of old inside jokes that haven’t been brought up in years, make a picture slideshow or poster board that you can present at the party from way back in the day. You want to get a bit embarrassing, but not too embarrassing.
- Invite some unexpected guests. If you have any old mutual friends that the birthday boy or girl hasn’t seen in a long time, then you can really make the event a memorable one by having a few surprise guests. Be sure to notify these people well in advance, since they probably live far away or have some other reason for not being seen in a long time. You could even get a few people together and choreograph a little dance routine. How cute would that be?
- Make sure there’s great music. Of course, no party is truly memorable without an amazing musical selection. If you can, it’s great to book a live band. One that will dedicate a few songs to your honoree, and get everyone laughing and dancing is your ideal band. If you can’t get a band, an incredible playlist can go a long way. Spend a lot of time putting this playlist together, and it will be just another gift that you can share with your friend for years to come.
- Make it a surprise. If your friend tends to be low-key on birthdays, this is the perfect time to really give him or her surprise of a lifetime. You can pretend that you are just going to have an intimate dinner or watch a classic movie at home, and then blow them away over and over again when you pull all the stops. Just be sure that everyone knows that it’s a surprise party, and you may even want to wait until the last minute to tell some of your friends who are known, blabbermouths.
- Go all out with the decorations. Of course, no party really feels complete without a full set of decorations. You can buy all kinds of party decorations with just online, and you can get tons of ideas on how to go DIY with websites like Pinterest. No matter what you do, make sure that you make everything super fun and have enough decorations to really make the scene feel complete. If you just put a few things up here and there, your lackluster effort will be felt by everyone.
Treatment Options for Back Pain During Pregnancy
Are you expecting a baby? If so, congratulations! There is nothing more beautiful, or miraculous, as carrying and birthing a baby. That said, if you’re someone who is past your first trimester, you can probably also attest to the fact that as your baby is growing and your body has to make necessary adjustments, sometimes the process can be painful. Especially when it comes to back pain.

The good news is that there are certain things that you can do that will help to relieve your back discomfort. If you’re interested in knowing about some of the treatment options for back pain during pregnancy, we have offered you five of them below:
Get an exercise ball. If you ask just about any mother who used an exercise ball during their pregnancy what they liked about it, they will probably spend the next several minutes telling you just how much of a lifesaver that it was. One of the main reasons why it’s such a favorite is because by sitting on the ball, you will instantly feel comfort and physical relief. Although you can use it to simply sit on while you’re at work, eating or watching television, you can also use it to do different kinds of exercises too. One website that offers you several kinds of exercises is Baby Zone. Just go to the site and put “exercise for pregnancy fitness” in the search field.
Do some low-impact workouts. When you have back pain, you probably will not feel much like exercising but the reality is that by doing so, you can actually make your back (and the rest of your body) feel much better. The key is to do low-impact exercises like yoga or water aerobics.
Lift things properly. If you must lift something on your own, the key is to pick it up with your legs rather than your back. You can do this by kneeling down, one knee at a time, in order to get to what you are trying to reach. However, if your back is already in pain, we recommend that you do not pick the item up and that you ask someone for assistance instead. Better to wait for what you want than to put further strain on your back by lifting things up all by yourself.
Have back massages. Something else that you can do for back pain remedies is purchasing what is known as a mat. It’s a mat that’s created in such a way that it helps to remove stress and pain. However, if you can’t seem to find relief from using it, consider getting some lower back massages. Just make sure that you get them from a licensed massage therapist. Being that you are pregnant, you need to receive massages from someone who is trained in working with women in your condition.
Watch how you sleep. According to many reports, when you’re sleeping on your back, you are putting as much as 55 pounds of pressure on it. That can definitely add to back discomfort. So, try either laying on your side with a pillow in between your knees or if you would prefer to be on your back, put a pillow under your knees. That will cut the amount of weight that your back feels in half. For information on great pregnancy pillows that you can buy, visit Contour Living, A Pea in the Pod, BabyAge, Amazon or Walmart.
